So, as I'm sure you know, it was Election Day a couple of days ago. I hope you don't need me to tell you that the Liberals won a minority government. I had been more involved in this election than any other so far in my life, but that doesn't mean I voted. I hope you did. I really wanted to, and do not have a good excuse, so I'm rather ashamed. So, how was I involved?

Well, for the first time, I read stuff on the internet, read some newspapers and had conversations with people. One of my favourite conversations was the drunken one KC and I had with a couple of enthusiastic 19-year olds. It was after the Slitch show (which was terrible, but I'll get to that), standing in the rain, eating hot dogs under a tree. I can't remember much of it now, but I was excited to see these youngsters so interested. Since Youth Can Vote, I'm glad they seem to be more into it these days than my friends and I were at their age.

Why didn't I vote if I was so interested? I had formed very strong opinions for and against certain parties and their leaders, why not mark my 'x'? I'm lazy, and they make it too hard for me. Honestly, I think I fall into some demographic of people whose votes they don't want (and really, that's all the more reason to give it to them). I've been of eligible voting age for over 6 years, but have never been enumerated. I've seen them go up and down my neighbourhood, skipping some houses; mine being one of them. I file my taxes every year and always say "yes" to registering for Elections Canada. I've lived in the same house for almost 2 years now, but I did not receive a voter's card. I had to work, and after work, I had to go to the jamspot and learn some new songs. So, I didn't make it.

I know I could've found out where to go. I could've brought my ID and proof of address. I could've gone early before work, or pushed practice back until after voting, but I just didn't care enough. I know (and it's my personal pessimistic view) that my vote DOESN'T matter. Yeah, yeah, every vote counts. That may be true if I were to vote Green Party or Marijuana Party. But I would've voted Anti-Conservative, and in my riding, I probably would've went NDP. I'm not sure if I was in Alexa's riding, but she won, so she didn't need my vote. As far as voting for the Prime Minister, us Haligonians have little say in that. Sure, if less of us voted NDP, the Liberals might be closer to a majority, and if more of us voted CPC, the country might be screwed right now, but in the end, the bigger provinces matter more.

So, I didn't vote, I hope you did. I can't change it now, and although I'm disappointed in myself, I don't really care.

Why did I say the Slitch show was terrible? First off, I don't mean that as an insult against the band or the people. But, it was to be expected. They hadn't played together in a long time, and some members dislike other members. I had fun at the show, and I'm glad I went, but they were trashed and the playing wasn't good. Some parts of songs were forgotten by some members. I was feeling sad and anti-social, so it was nice to lean against the pillar with Alfred for a while. It was also nice to push my way up front with Meghan. There was a 2 by 4, some Drock vomit, and some showing of Al's wang, all of which I missed somehow. I spit beer all over Don, and he REALLY didn't like it. But he was asking the audience for beer, and that's all I had. I'm sad they'll never play again. Slitch had it's day, and I had some great times with them. I'm glad that I was able to develop friendships with most of them over the last year, and that most of them will be moving on with Flagshipsinker and System Shit.

Shit!! I forgot to get my shirt from Greg yesterday!!

I'm feeling much better now. (That line always reminds me of John Astin's character on Night Court. I loved that show, and he was one of my favourites on it. He's also the father of the Hobbit, Samwise Gamgee.)

Later.

  • It shouldn't surprise me that the bureaucrats get addresses wrong, even when you've been there awhile. On Monday, I bumped into Liverpudlian, Adam Barnes, on his was to L-Dot to vote. He's been living in Woodstock, NB, with his WIFE for 2 years, and they still have him registered in Liverpool with his parents.

I've lived at the same address for three years and my sister lived here for two before that. It only makes sense that I get three voter cards of people who don't live here. What the fuck?

Don't yell at me, brian, without fully reading my post.

"I know I could've found out where to go. I could've brought my ID and proof of address...but I just didn't care enough."

Also, I don't have a "driver's" ID. AND, my ID has the wrong address.

There were Alexa signs ALL over my street...But I don't know.

Sorry about the defensiveness. It does bug me, though, that they make it so hard. I know I could've taken on more responsibility, but what I'm saying is, why should I have to?

Maybe if the popular vote meant something, I'd have more encouragement to get involved with this screwy system our country has. I want vote for the person I want, not some stupid ass local candidate. What if I love their party leader, but think they would be bad locally, or vice versa?
